R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Lone Star Flag, with its vibrant fields of red,

 1-2     white, and blue and a single inset star, has served as a proud

 1-3     symbol of Texas since 1839; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, At the request of President Mirabeau B. Lamar, Dr.

 1-5     Charles B. Stewart of Montgomery County created this inspirational

 1-6     banner, and the elegant simplicity of his design truly exemplified

 1-7     the united will of the citizens of the new Republic of Texas; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, After winning approval by a committee of six signers

 1-9     of the Texas Declaration of Independence and then Congress, the

1-10     Lone Star Flag was officially designated in 1839, and since that

1-11     time it has graced flagpoles across the state of Texas; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Following Dr. Stewart's passing, his flag sketch and

1-13     other materials were handed down first to his son, Edmund, and

1-14     later to his granddaughter, Elizabeth Stewart Fling, who donated

1-15     them to the State Archives in Austin in order to preserve her

1-16     grandfather's historic works for current and future generations of

1-17     Texans; and

1-18           WHEREAS, In recognition of Dr. Stewart's timeless

1-19     contribution to our state's heritage, a history of the flag

1-20     documentation was created for permanent display at the Montgomery

1-21     County Heritage Museum in Conroe; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Dr. Charles B. Stewart's design of the Lone Star

1-23     Flag created in cloth and in color an embodiment of the spirit and

1-24     will of the people of Texas, and his work remains a great source of

 2-1     pride to the people of Montgomery County today, nearly 160 years

 2-2     after its creation; now, therefore, be it

 2-3           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-4     Legislature hereby officially commemorate Montgomery County as the

 2-5     birthplace of the Lone Star Flag.
