R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, February 18, 1997, marked the dedication and 1-2 official opening of San Antonio's Dorie Miller Community Center, 1-3 and this auspicious occasion is indeed worthy of special praise and 1-4 recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Named for World War II hero Doris "Dorie" Miller, 1-6 the center will incorporate a number of valuable community 1-7 services, including a health clinic, a Parks and Recreation 1-8 Department facility, a Police Athletic League office, and a 1-9 community meeting room; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A mess attendant on the battleship U.S.S. West 1-11 Virginia, Doris Miller became a hero during the Japanese attack on 1-12 Pearl Harbor, manning a machine gun and downing four enemy bombers 1-13 before being ordered to abandon ship; awarded the Navy Cross in 1-14 1942, he was killed the next year at the age of 24 when the 1-15 aircraft carrier on which he was serving was torpedoed and sank; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, The story of Doris Miller's courageous actions has 1-18 stirred and inspired generations of Americans, and by dedicating 1-19 this community center to his memory, San Antonio residents honor 1-20 his sacrifice even as they work toward a brighter future for their 1-21 neighbors and themselves; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 1-23 Legislature hereby commemorate the opening of the Dorie Miller 1-24 Community Center and extend to all those involved in the center's 2-1 creation best wishes for success in the years to come.
