R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Ector County Independent School District has

 1-2     been selected as a winner of a 1997 Award for Excellence in Texas

 1-3     School Health; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The district's "Be a Champ:  Beat the Smoke!"

 1-5     campaign has been recognized as an Outstanding District-Wide

 1-6     Project; Ector County ISD representatives will receive the

 1-7     district's award and the accompanying $500 prize on June 5, 1997,

 1-8     at a banquet at Southwest Texas State University; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Established in 1989, the Awards for Excellence in

1-10     Texas School Health program seeks to recognize and reward

1-11     individual schools and school districts for their efforts to

1-12     address health concerns that affect both students and staff, as

1-13     well as their families; and

1-14           WHEREAS, The program is sponsored by the Texas Department of

1-15     Health in cooperation with the Texas Education Agency and the Texas

1-16     Cancer Council, and it receives additional financial support from

1-17     the Texas Health Foundation; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Encouraging our children to make healthy lifestyle

1-19     choices during their formative years has had a positive impact on

1-20     their physical and emotional well-being, and  programs  such  as

1-21     "Be a Champ:  Beat the Smoke!" are not only creating awareness, but

1-22     are also helping to ensure that our children live healthier,

1-23     happier lives; now, therefore, be it

1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-1     Legislature hereby congratulate the Ector County Independent School

 2-2     District on receiving a 1997 Award for Excellence in Texas School

 2-3     Health and extend to all those participating sincere best wishes

 2-4     for continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be

 2-5     it further

 2-6           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 2-7     prepared for the faculty, staff, and students of the Ector County

 2-8     Independent School District as an expression of high regard by the

 2-9     Texas House of Representatives.
