                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, For more than half a century, radio station KCOR has

 1-2     served the San Antonio area with integrity and distinction, and

 1-3     this remarkable asset to the Lone Star State is truly deserving of

 1-4     special praise and recognition; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, First founded by Raoul A. Cortez in 1945, KCOR was

 1-6     the first radio station in the United States to broadcast full-time

 1-7     in Spanish, and when in 1975 it was purchased by McHenry Tichenor

 1-8     it became part of the largest group of Spanish-language radio

 1-9     stations in the nation; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Since its inception, KCOR has been a vital source of

1-11     information for area residents, and talk shows and listener call-in

1-12     features remain a mainstay of the station's programming; by

1-13     regularly featuring elected officials and civic leaders from

1-14     throughout the United States and Latin America, KCOR offers its

1-15     listeners a broad range of current opinion; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Throughout the station's history, its staff and

1-17     management have demonstrated their commitment to public service,

1-18     and their remarkable record includes such valuable and varied

1-19     initiatives as voter registration drives, fundraising efforts in

1-20     behalf of disaster victims, contributions to scholarship funds, and

1-21     the development of the nation's first Hispanic State Fair and San

1-22     Antonio's blood bank membership drive, as well as their sponsorship

1-23     of the Chicano of the Month and Chicano of the Year awards; and

1-24           WHEREAS, KCOR's reputation as a cornerstone of the community

 2-1     is underscored by the great number of organizations that benefit

 2-2     from the advice and experience of its representatives, including

 2-3     the Camino Real board of directors, journalism boards at San

 2-4     Antonio Community College and Incarnate Word College, and Lutheran

 2-5     General Hospital's advisory board for diabetes; the station is also

 2-6     closely associated with such worthwhile endeavors as the Mexican

 2-7     American Business and Professional Women's Association, the

 2-8     Southwest Voter Registration Project, and the Bilingual-Bicultural

 2-9     Coalition of Mass Media; and

2-10           WHEREAS, The winner of the American Association of

2-11     Broadcasters' prestigious Marconi Award, KCOR's excellence as a

2-12     radio station is aptly mirrored by its stature as a corporate

2-13     citizen of San Antonio and Texas, and it is indeed fitting at this

2-14     time to recognize the station's unique place in the history of

2-15     broadcasting and great importance to the people of Texas; now,

2-16     therefore, be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-18     Legislature hereby honor all those associated with radio station

2-19     KCOR and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success

2-20     in the years to come; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-22     prepared for display in the offices of KCOR as an expression of

2-23     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
