R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of John Lowery on May 21, 1997,
1-2 at the age of 79, has brought a great loss to the many friends and
1-3 relatives of this esteemed Lubbock civic leader; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born October 21, 1917, in Julesberg, Colorado, this
1-5 patriotic gentleman served his nation with the utmost distinction
1-6 during World War II as a B-29 bomber pilot in the United States Air
1-7 Force; and
1-8 WHEREAS, After completing his military service, Mr. Lowery
1-9 relocated with his family to Lubbock and pursued a successful
1-10 career in sales and marketing with Birds Eye frozen foods and Bell
1-11 Dairy; he was the first person to be elected Executive of the Year
1-12 by the Lubbock Sales Executive Club, attaining that singular honor
1-13 in 1974; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Lowery devoted considerable time and energy to
1-15 the Lubbock Lions Club, serving as the organization's president
1-16 from 1956 through 1959, and was instrumental in making his local
1-17 chapter the largest in the country; he also played a significant
1-18 role in the construction of the first hospital at Lions Crippled
1-19 Children's Camp in Kerrville; and
1-20 WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Lowery was an active member of the
1-21 Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge No. 841, the
1-22 Downtown Bible Class, and the advisory board of the Salvation Army;
1-23 and
1-24 WHEREAS, John Lowery was a man of great compassion and
2-1 commitment; although his warmth and wisdom are gone from us now,
2-2 his remarkable spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many
2-3 people whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
2-4 therefore, be it
2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-6 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Lowery and
2-7 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
2-8 Clarice Lowery; to his son, William C. Lowery; to his brothers,
2-9 Larence Lowery and Richard Lowery; to his sisters, Lois Bowman,
2-10 Louise Murphy, Marilyn Winans, and Ester Smith; to his two
2-11 grandchildren; and to the many other friends and relatives of this
2-12 beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-15 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-16 John Lowery.
