R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of David H. Hall, of Houston, on

 1-2     May 4, 1997, at the age of 49, has brought a great loss to the

 1-3     relatives and many friends of this beloved man; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Houston, Coach Hall was a graduate of

 1-5     Westbury High School and The University of Texas, where he was an

 1-6     outstanding baseball player; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Coach Hall was a member of three Southwest

 1-8     Conference champion baseball teams at Texas and was All Southwest

 1-9     Conference in 1969 and 1970; in addition, this outstanding athlete

1-10     was the Southwest Conference batting champion in 1970 and set the

1-11     NCAA record for most doubles (27) in a season; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Upon graduation from The University of Texas, Coach

1-13     Hall served as coach for the Longhorn junior varsity baseball team

1-14     before accepting a position at Irving Nimitz High School and later,

1-15     Carrollton Turner High School, where his teams made it to the state

1-16     baseball tournament on two occasions; and

1-17           WHEREAS, After his success on the high school level, Coach

1-18     Hall joined the coaching staff at Lamar University for two years

1-19     before becoming head baseball coach at Rice University; while at

1-20     Rice, he amassed a stellar record of 338 wins and 267 losses in 11

1-21     seasons and was named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in

1-22     1981; and

1-23           WHEREAS, In 1995, Coach Hall returned to the high school

1-24     coaching ranks when he took the position of head coach at Cypress

 2-1     Creek High School in Houston, where he shared both his knowledge

 2-2     and love for the game of baseball with his players; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Coach Hall was diagnosed with non-smoking-related

 2-4     lung cancer in the summer of 1996, but valiantly continued to coach

 2-5     his young charges to a 14-0 district championship and a trip to the

 2-6     playoffs this season; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Coach Hall's spirit and determination was an

 2-8     inspiration to his players, who in a unique and touching show of

 2-9     support shaved their heads this season out of respect for their

2-10     coach who had lost his hair to chemotherapy; and

2-11           WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Coach Hall drew on the love

2-12     and support of his family, in particular his wife Deborah Hall and

2-13     their daughter Wendy Hall, who were a source of pride and joy to

2-14     him throughout his life; and

2-15           WHEREAS, A winner both on the baseball field and off, David

2-16     H. Hall left an indelible mark on his family, friends, players, and

2-17     community, and although his friendship and guidance will be missed

2-18     by all who knew him, his spirit will indeed live on in the hearts

2-19     and minds of the many people whose lives he touched; now,

2-20     therefore, be it

2-21           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-22     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of David H. Hall and

2-23     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his wife,

2-24     Deborah A. Hall; to his daughter, Wendy A. Hall; to his parents,

2-25     Patrick and Helen Hall; to his sisters, Patti and Nancy Hall; and

2-26     to the many other relatives and friends of this esteemed Texan;

2-27     and, be it further

 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 3-2     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

 3-3     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

 3-4     David H. Hall.
