                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, Bert Kruger Smith was recently honored by the Austin

 1-2     Board of Realtors, who designated her as Austin's Most Worthy

 1-3     Citizen of 1996; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A resident of Austin for 56 years, Mrs. Smith is a

 1-5     noted author, having written and edited some 120 publications; her

 1-6     nationally published works include a novel, A Teaspoon of Honey,

 1-7     and several exceptional nonfiction books such as Looking Forward,

 1-8     The Pursuit of Dignity, Aging In America, Insights for Uptights,

 1-9     Your Non-Learning Child: His World Upside Down, and No  Language

1-10     But a Cry; and

1-11           WHEREAS, She is also a special consultant to the Hogg

1-12     Foundation for Mental Health at The University of Texas and serves

1-13     on numerous local, state, national, and international boards; her

1-14     volunteer work during 1995 and 1996 alone included board service or

1-15     advisory membership on the Adult Services Council, AISD Citizens'

1-16     Bonds Advisory Committee, Family Eldercare, St. David's Community

1-17     Hospital, Conference of Southwest Foundations, and the Veterans

1-18     Administration; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Her commitment to the welfare of older citizens is

1-20     exemplified by her role as a founding member of Austin Groups for

1-21     the Elderly, a unique organization that provides needed information

1-22     and referrals to the elderly; and

1-23           WHEREAS, In recognition of her significant contributions,

1-24     Mrs. Kruger has received a number of accolades, including the

 2-1     Mental Health Association Community Service Award, Conference of

 2-2     Southwest Foundations Founders' Spirit Award, Texas Joint

 2-3     Conference on Aging Leadership Award, Texas Long-Term Care

 2-4     Volunteer Award, International Training in Communication Founders'

 2-5     Day Woman of the Year Award, City of Austin Distinguished Service

 2-6     Award, and many others; in addition, she was awarded an honorary

 2-7     Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Missouri and

 2-8     is an inductee of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, In 1983 The University of Texas at Austin bestowed

2-10     on  her a significant honor through the creation of the Bert Kruger

2-11     Smith Centennial Professorship in the School of Social Work; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Bert Kruger Smith has shown exemplary dedication to

2-13     her community, setting standards for civic involvement to which all

2-14     can aspire, and it is indeed fitting that she receive special

2-15     legislative recognition for her many accomplishments at this time;

2-16     now, therefore, be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-18     Legislature hereby congratulate Bert Kruger Smith on being chosen

2-19     Austin's Most Worthy Citizen of 1996 by the Austin Board of

2-20     Realtors; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-22     prepared for Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the

2-23     Texas House of Representatives.
