R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On September 6, 1997, proud faculty, staff,
1-2 students, alumni, and the community of Stephen F. Austin High
1-3 School in Houston will gather to celebrate the school's 60th
1-4 anniversary, and this noteworthy occasion is truly worthy of
1-5 special praise and recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Named after the legendary pioneer known as the
1-7 Father of Texas, Stephen F. Austin High School has itself become an
1-8 integral part of the history of the Lone Star State, and since its
1-9 founding approximately 19,000 young men and women have graduated
1-10 from the school; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Graduates of Austin High School include a number of
1-12 notable Texans, including City Controller Lloyd Kelly, retired
1-13 Sheriff Johnny Klevenhagen and his wife Carol Klevenhagen, Houston
1-14 Entertainment, Inc., President Joe Nelson III, basketball great and
1-15 Olympic medalist Ken Spain, State Representative Diana Davila,
1-16 Constable Victor Trevino, Justice of the Peace Richard C. Vara, and
1-17 baseball coach and former player Joel Youngblood; among alumni
1-18 returning for the celebration to salute the familiar school colors
1-19 of kelly green and white will also be Harold Farb, Mary Frances
1-20 Hofheinz Graham, Hal Hillman, Judge Miron Love, Jack Milman, and
1-21 David Walters; and
1-22 WHEREAS, The school today continues to uphold the proud
1-23 traditions of academic excellence and achievement that have
1-24 benefited its graduates for more than half a century, and
2-1 innovative programs such as the magnet school for the teaching
2-2 professions underscore Austin High School's uniqueness; and
2-3 WHEREAS, The school's faculty and staff have distinguished
2-4 themselves as gifted educators and astute administrators, and
2-5 principal Jose Trevino's leadership of this talented team is apt
2-6 tribute to his predecessors, George A. Loescher, Dr. James H.
2-7 Goettee, Harmon Watts, Henry Smith, Ernest Baker, Otilia Urbina,
2-8 and Dr. Roy Torres; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Under the direction of co-chairs Jacque McDonald
2-10 Royce and Marsha Mathis Eckerman, the school's anniversary
2-11 celebration promises to be a festive and enjoyable event for all
2-12 present; a highlight will be the groundbreaking of the Stephen F.
2-13 Austin High School Walk of Fame, and this ongoing legacy of the
2-14 school's extended family will also serve to raise funds for
2-15 scholarships and other worthwhile purposes; and
2-16 WHEREAS, Even as the assembled celebrants take pride and
2-17 satisfaction in Austin High School's first 60 years, they look
2-18 forward to embracing the challenges and opportunities of the
2-19 future, and it is indeed fitting at this time to recognize the
2-20 school's many contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
2-21 be it
2-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-23 Legislature hereby commemorate Stephen F. Austin High School's 60th
2-24 anniversary and extend to all those connected with the school
2-25 sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness in the
2-26 years to come; and, be it further
2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-1 prepared for display at Stephen F. Austin High School as an
3-2 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
