                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of L. P. "Pete" Gilvin

 1-2     were greatly saddened by his passing on May 30, 1997, at the age of

 1-3     93, and we join them in mourning their loss; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A lifetime Amarillo resident, Mr. Gilvin graduated

 1-5     from Amarillo High School and studied engineering at The University

 1-6     of Texas before returning to the area to join his father in the

 1-7     construction business; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, In the years that followed, Mr. Gilvin established

 1-9     himself as one of the area's preeminent contractors of highway and

1-10     road work; the chairman of the board of Gilvin-Terrill, Inc., he

1-11     was also past president of the National Associated General

1-12     Contractors of America; and

1-13           WHEREAS, In 1939, Mr. Gilvin married the former Wanda Struve,

1-14     and the couple enjoyed a relationship that continued to grow in

1-15     mutual respect and affection until Mrs. Gilvin's death in 1995; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Well known as a dedicated patron of the arts,

1-17     Mr. Gilvin lent his support to such organizations as the Lone Star

1-18     Ballet, the Amarillo Art Center, and the Amarillo Symphony; a 1976

1-19     recipient of the Texas Art Award for Distinguished Contributions to

1-20     the Arts by an Individual, he and Mrs. Gilvin were also named the

1-21     1993 Philanthropists of the Year by the National Association of

1-22     Fund Raising Executives; and

1-23           WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Gilvin gave freely of his time and

1-24     talent to  Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and the Don and Sybil Harrington

 2-1     Cancer Center, and in recognition of his outstanding public service

 2-2     he was named the Amarillo Globe-News Man of the Year in 1968; a

 2-3     trusted public servant, he was appointed to serve as chairman of

 2-4     the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission by Governor John Connally

 2-5     in that year as well; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, L. P. "Pete" Gilvin worked

 2-7     for the betterment of his community, and although he will be

 2-8     missed, his vision and generosity of spirit will live on in the

 2-9     legacy of his many contributions to his fellow Texans; now,

2-10     therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby honor the memory of L. P. "Pete" Gilvin and

2-13     extend sincere sympathy to his family and many friends and

2-14     admirers; and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That when the Texas House of Representatives

2-16     adjourns this day, it do so in memory of L. P. "Pete" Gilvin.
