No. 1386 75R17591 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Midway High School math and science team has 1-2 ascended to the pinnacle of success by winning the sweepstakes 1-3 award, three team championships, and seven individual trophies at 1-4 the 1997 Texas Math and Science Coaches Association meet in San 1-5 Antonio; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Mathematics and science are among the cornerstones 1-7 of learning, and by successfully mastering the many individual 1-8 disciplines within these vital areas of study, the Midway High 1-9 School math and science team has achieved a truly remarkable feat; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, In addition to claiming the sweepstakes award, 1-12 Midway took first place in several team competitions, including 1-13 calculator, number sense, and general mathematics; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The team's performance in individual events was 1-15 equally impressive: Eric Peden was first, Trey Welch second, and 1-16 Katye McClendon fifth in freshman calculator; among sophomores in 1-17 the calculator category, Deidre Force placed third, and Laurie 1-18 Brock and Mary Brock tied for fifth position; Sam Keen won the 1-19 junior calculator competition outright, and Carrie Pennington tied 1-20 for top honors in senior calculator; and 1-21 WHEREAS, In freshman number sense competition, Eric Peden was 1-22 first, Katye McClendon second, and Trey Welch fourth; Mary Brock 1-23 and Laurie Brock placed third and fourth, respectively, in 1-24 sophomore number sense; Sam Keen took another first place trophy in 2-1 junior number sense, and Carrie Pennington was sixth among seniors; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, Midway also made a strong showing in math, with Sam 2-4 Keen placing first among juniors; Eric Peden, Katye McClendon, and 2-5 Trey Welch took first, second, and third in the freshman division; 2-6 Carrie Pennington was fourth in senior math; in sophomore math, 2-7 Mary Brock was eighth, Deidre Force tied for ninth, and Laurie 2-8 Brock tied for 14th place; and 2-9 WHEREAS, In science, Trey Welch placed second and Eric Peden 2-10 was sixth in the freshman competition, Sam Keen was third among 2-11 juniors, and Carrie Pennington was 18th in the senior category; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The team members received invaluable assistance from 2-13 their coach Jim Pappas, whose unfailing encouragement enabled his 2-14 young charges to perform to the best of their abilities; and 2-15 WHEREAS, These dedicated Texans are a source of tremendous 2-16 pride to their families and to the students and faculty of Midway 2-17 High School, and their superb accomplishments are indeed worthy of 2-18 special legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-20 Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Midway High 2-21 School math and science team for their exceptional performance at 2-22 the 1997 Texas Math and Science Coaches Association meet and extend 2-23 sincere best wishes to them for continued success and happiness in 2-24 all their future endeavors; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 prepared for the team members and Coach Pappas as an expression of 2-27 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
