                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

 1-1                                   AN ACT

 1-2     relating to requiring public schools to post telephone numbers of

 1-3     law enforcement agencies for students to use in reporting certain

 1-4     illegal conduct.

 1-5           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-6           SECTION 1.  Subchapter A, Chapter 37, Education Code, is

 1-7     amended by adding Section 37.0161 to read as follows:

 1-8           Sec. 37.0161.  POSTING OF TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR STUDENT

 1-9     REPORTS OF ILLEGAL CONDUCT.  Each school shall post, in a location

1-10     clearly visible to students, the telephone number of a local law

1-11     enforcement agency that a student may call to report:

1-12                 (1)  the presence of an illegal weapon or illegal drug

1-13     in the school or at a school-sponsored or school-related activity;

1-14                 (2)  an attempt by a person, at the school or during a

1-15     school-sponsored or school-related activity, to sell or give an

1-16     illegal drug to the student; or

1-17                 (3)  an assault, robbery, or theft that occurred at the

1-18     school or during a school-sponsored or school-related activity.

1-19           SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 1997-1998

1-20     school year.

1-21           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-22     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-23     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-24     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

 2-1     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,

 2-2     and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its

 2-3     passage, and it is so enacted.
