                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

                                       AN ACT

 1-1     relating to certain juror donations used to compensate victims of

 1-2     crime.

 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-4           SECTION 1.  Subsection (a), Section 61.003, Government Code,

 1-5     is amended to read as follows:

 1-6           (a)  Each [A person responsible under Section 62.013 or

 1-7     62.014 for summoning prospective jurors to appear for jury service

 1-8     shall provide to each] prospective juror reporting for jury service

 1-9     shall be provided a form letter that when signed by the prospective

1-10     juror directs the county treasurer to donate all [or part] of the

1-11     prospective juror's reimbursement for jury service to the

1-12     compensation to victims of crime fund under Subchapter B, Chapter

1-13     56, Code of Criminal Procedure.

1-14           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 1997, and

1-15     applies only to donations from jurors appearing in response to a

1-16     summons issued on or after that date.

1-17           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-18     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-19     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-20     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-21     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
