                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

 1-1                                   AN ACT

 1-2     relating to certain juror donations used to compensate victims of

 1-3     crime.

 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 61.003(a), Government Code, is amended to

 1-6     read as follows:

 1-7           (a)  Each [A person responsible under Section 62.013 or

 1-8     62.014 for summoning prospective jurors to appear for jury service

 1-9     shall provide to each] prospective juror reporting for jury service

1-10     shall be provided a form letter that when signed by the prospective

1-11     juror directs the county treasurer to donate all [or part] of the

1-12     prospective juror's reimbursement for jury service to the

1-13     compensation to victims of crime fund under Subchapter B, Chapter

1-14     56, Code of Criminal Procedure.

1-15           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 1997, and

1-16     applies only to donations from jurors appearing in response to a

1-17     summons issued on or after that date.

1-18           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-19     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-20     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-21     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-22     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
