No. 1357 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed March 13, 1997; March 18, 1997, read 1-3 first time and referred to Committee on Education; April 10, 1997, 1-4 reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 11, Nays 0; 1-5 April 10, 1997, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to compensation of school district trustees. 1-9 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-10 SECTION 1. Subsection (d), Section 11.061, Education Code, 1-11 is amended to read as follows: 1-12 (d) The trustees serve without compensation, unless 1-13 compensation of a specified amount, not to exceed $500 annually, is 1-14 approved by a majority of the votes cast at an election held by the 1-15 district. The trustees may not hold an election solely for the 1-16 purpose of submitting a measure on trustee compensation to the 1-17 voters. Notwithstanding this subsection, a trustee may not receive 1-18 compensation if the trustee: 1-19 (1) holds an office other than the position of trustee 1-20 that is considered a civil office of emolument under Section 40, 1-21 Article XVI, Texas Constitution; or 1-22 (2) receives other compensation directly or indirectly 1-23 from the state. 1-24 SECTION 2. The importance of this legislation and the 1-25 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-26 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-27 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-28 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended, 1-29 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its 1-30 passage, and it is so enacted. 1-31 * * * * *
