 1-7     Amend S.B. No. 1808, page 1, line 21, by replacing $4 with $2 and

 1-8     adding the following sentence after the word "session." on line 22:

 1-9           "The fee may be increased to an amount not to exceed $4 if

1-10     approved by the students in a student referendum."

1-11                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

1-12                                   AN ACT

1-13     relating to the international education fee at The University of

1-14     Texas at Austin.

1-15           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

1-16           SECTION 1.  Subsection (a), Section 54.5131, Education Code,

1-17     is amended to read as follows:

1-18           (a)  The board of regents of The University of Texas System

1-19     may charge and collect from students registered at The University

1-20     of Texas at Austin a fee of $4 [$1] for any semester or summer

1-21     session.  The fee may be used only for funding an international

1-22     education program [financial aid fund] to be used to assist

1-23     students participating in international student exchange or study

1-24     programs.

1-25           SECTION 2.  The changes in law made by this Act to Section

1-26     54.5131, Education Code, apply beginning with the fall semester,

1-27     1997.

1-28           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the

1-29     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an

1-30     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the

1-31     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several

1-32     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,

1-33     and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its

1-34     passage, and it is so enacted.
