No. 59 97S0960/1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-2 honoring the women of Texas who have served in our nation's armed 1-3 forces and in recognizing March 26, 1997, as Texas Women Veterans 1-4 Day; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Since March is Women's History Month and there are 1-6 records of women serving in our military that date back to the 1-7 Civil War, it is an appropriate time to celebrate Texas Women 1-8 Veterans Day; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The number of women serving in the United States 1-10 Armed Forces and the number of women veterans continues to 1-11 increase; there are over 84,000 women currently living in Texas who 1-12 have served in the military; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Women contribute greatly to the security of our 1-14 country through honorable military service that often involves 1-15 tremendous hardship and danger; 37,080 women served during wartime 1-16 in the Persian Gulf, Vietnam, Korea, and World War II and a total 1-17 of 56,120 women actually from Texas have served in the military; 1-18 and 1-19 WHEREAS, Texas Women Veterans Day provides citizens with the 1-20 opportunity to show their loyal support for the brave women of our 1-21 state who have defended our nation's ideals, security, and safety; 1-22 it is also a time to focus on the special needs of women veterans 1-23 and to show appreciation for their many contributions to our 2-1 society; and 2-2 WHEREAS, It is fitting that the Texas Legislature honor the 2-3 women of Texas who have served in the military for the love they 2-4 have demonstrated for our country and for their exceptional valor 2-5 and loyalty; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-7 hereby commend Texas women veterans on their outstanding service on 2-8 behalf of our country and extend to them best wishes on Texas Women 2-9 Veterans Day; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for them 2-11 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
