                            SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, Many proud residents of Lubbock will be in Austin on

 1-2     April 1, 1997, to celebrate Lubbock Day at the State Capitol, and

 1-3     this affords a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to this fine

 1-4     Texas city; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Located in the heart of the South Plains and

 1-6     surrounded by miles of fertile farmland, the Lubbock area has

 1-7     attracted settlers for thousands of years, and fossil evidence at

 1-8     Lubbock Lake Landmark State Historical Park yields evidence that

 1-9     the region has been continuously occupied since 12,000 B.C.; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Nicknamed Hub City, Lubbock boasts a

1-11     business-friendly climate and an outstanding public education

1-12     system that have established a strong economic base for the city,

1-13     and the added features of an excellent highway system and an

1-14     accessible airport have secured Lubbock's reputation as the

1-15     wholesale and retail trade center of a 26-county area of Texas and

1-16     New Mexico; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The home of several world-class institutions of

1-18     higher learning, including Texas Tech University, Lubbock features

1-19     many of the amenities of big city life while preserving the

1-20     character and charm of a small West Texas town; the city features

1-21     several state-of-the-art medical facilities as well, and it is the

1-22     largest health care provider between Phoenix and the Dallas/Fort

1-23     Worth metroplex; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, Cultural and recreational opportunities abound in

 2-2     Lubbock; visitors can immerse themselves in fascinating exhibits at

 2-3     the Museum of Texas Tech University, the National Ranching Heritage

 2-4     Center, and the Lubbock Fine Arts Center or enjoy the great

 2-5     outdoors at Buffalo Springs Lake and Mackenzie State Park, home of

 2-6     one of the few remaining prairie dog colonies in the nation; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Music lovers around the world are familiar with the

 2-8     legendary Lubbock sound, a fusion of roots rock, honky tonk, and

 2-9     blues; from rock-and-roll icon Buddy Holly to Joe Ely, Butch

2-10     Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the city has produced a

2-11     remarkable number of talented musicians who have earned their place

2-12     in the pantheon of music greats; and

2-13           WHEREAS, Blessed with abundant natural resources and a

2-14     forward-looking population, Lubbock is one of the leading

2-15     participants in the Lone Star State's growth, and it is a pleasure

2-16     to recognize the city and its people at this time; now, therefore,

2-17     be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-19     hereby designate April 1, 1997, as Lubbock Day at the State Capitol

2-20     and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation from this

2-21     outstanding Texas city.
