SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is proud to 1-2 honor our nation's former prisoners of war by recognizing 1-3 Wednesday, April 9, 1997, as Former Prisoners of War Recognition 1-4 Day; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day is an 1-6 opportunity for former prisoners of war across the country to 1-7 express their continued support for one another and for citizens to 1-8 show their loyal support for the brave men and women who endured 1-9 suffering and tribulation during their capture and imprisonment; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, During World War II alone, 129,635 United States 1-12 military personnel and 18,745 civilians were captured and interned 1-13 by the Nazis and by the Japanese; and 1-14 WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation that reflects upon our 1-15 nation's history and recognizes the extreme sacrifices made by all 1-16 who have served in the armed forces and by those patriotic citizens 1-17 who were captured during conflict; and 1-18 WHEREAS, It is fitting that the Texas Legislature honor 1-19 former prisoners of war for the love they have demonstrated for our 1-20 country and for the extraordinary valor, loyalty, and perseverance 1-21 they exhibited during their internment; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-23 hereby encourage all Texans to observe Former Prisoners of War 2-1 Recognition Day on April 9, 1997; and, be it further 2-2 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared in honor 2-3 of all former prisoners of war as an expression of esteem from the 2-4 Texas Legislature. _______________________________ _______________________________ President of the Senate Speaker of the House I hereby certify that S.C.R.
