SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Legislature of Texas takes pleasure in

 1-2     recognizing the City of Ferris on its selection as one of the Texas

 1-3     Historical Commission's Official Texas Main Street Cities; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Independent Bankers Association of

 1-5     Texas, the Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program

 1-6     for historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The program was initiated in 1981, and more than 110

 1-8     communities across the state have been helped by the Main Street

 1-9     Program; and

1-10           WHEREAS, The City of Ferris was occupied in 1851 by settlers

1-11     who purchased a land grant; the Ephraim Andrews family and their

1-12     in-laws, the McKnight family, first inhabited the area; other

1-13     pioneer families were the Duffs, the Greens, the McDaniels, and the

1-14     Orrs; and

1-15           WHEREAS, In 1874, the Andrews family deeded the 100-acre

1-16     townsite, named for Judge J. W. Ferris, to the Houston and Texas

1-17     Central Railway; this outstanding city has been a brickmaking

1-18     center since 1895; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Today Ferris is a thriving community whose citizens

1-20     enjoy small town amenities while experiencing the advantages of

1-21     living near the Metroplex; and

1-22           WHEREAS, The First Lady of Texas, Mrs. Laura Bush, visited

1-23     the town on March 18, 1997, to participate in the festivities and

 2-1     deliver the keynote address and unveil the first architectural

 2-2     restoration drawing for the downtown renovation; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Mrs. Jan Bullock, wife of the Lieutenant Governor

 2-4     and a member of the Texas Historical Commission, gave the welcome

 2-5     address from the Texas State Historical Commission; now, therefore,

 2-6     be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-8     hereby congratulate the town of Ferris, Texas, on its selection as

 2-9     a Texas Main Street City; and, be it further

2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the

2-11     town as an expression of the highest esteem of the Texas

2-12     Legislature.
