SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Bartley-Woods School located in Fannin County,

 1-2     Texas, will receive an Official Texas Historical Marker at a

 1-3     special dedication ceremony on April 26, 1997; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The dedication of the marker will take place in the

 1-5     Fannin County National Guard Armory in Bonham, Texas, during the

 1-6     1997 Bartley-Woods all-school reunion to celebrate this historic

 1-7     occasion; it will be followed by the unveiling of the marker at the

 1-8     school site; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, In the early 1890s when the public school system was

1-10     being established, Fannin County rural schools were given names;

1-11     before 1892, all rural schools in the county were designated by

1-12     number; research revealed that three schools formed the nucleus for

1-13     the Bartley-Woods School; and

1-14           WHEREAS, The Fannin County Board of School Trustees

1-15     consolidated Bartley School, Woods School, and Providence School in

1-16     1932, and in 1940 Hail School was added to complete the

1-17     consolidation; a new modern school building costing $40,000 was

1-18     built on the school site in 1940; part of the handsome brick veneer

1-19     building designed by architect Hoke Smith, who was assisted by the

1-20     Works Progress Administration, remains today; and

1-21           WHEREAS, The new edifice housed seven classrooms, an

1-22     auditorium, a library, the superintendent's office, and a

1-23     cafeteria; a fully accredited school with 12 grades, Bartley-Woods

 2-1     School was officially dedicated on April 24, 1941; seven teachers

 2-2     instructed about 200 pupils; the pride of the community for their

 2-3     school through the years has enhanced the achievement of

 2-4     educational excellence maintained by the faculty year after year;

 2-5     and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Rural education began to change across the nation

 2-7     and, when the expanded consolidation of most small school districts

 2-8     occurred in the late 1950s, the Bartley-Woods School was closed

 2-9     officially; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-11     hereby extend congratulations to all those who gather to reminisce

2-12     and renew old friendships when Bartley-Woods School was an

2-13     important part of their lives; and, be it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared as a

2-15     memento of this notable occasion.
