SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-2 recognizing San Jacinto Day of 1997 and in paying tribute to the 1-3 brave men who fought in the Texas Revolution and to K. R. Wood who 1-4 has honored the "Fathers of Texas" in his recently released album; 1-5 and 1-6 WHEREAS, Texans owe the colonization of our state to such 1-7 brave men as Moses Austin and Stephen Fuller Austin and the birth 1-8 of the State of Texas to such heroes in the Texas Revolution as Sam 1-9 Houston, William B. Travis, Jim Bowie, James Fannin, and David 1-10 Crockett; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Beginning with the Battle of Gonzales, and 1-12 continuing with the Goliad Massacre and the Battle of the Alamo, 1-13 the Texas Revolution is the most significant event in the history 1-14 of our state; the concluding military event of the Texas 1-15 Revolution, the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, secured 1-16 the freedom of Texas from Mexico and reshaped the future for all 1-17 Texans; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In honor of our founding fathers and the heroes of 1-19 the Texas Revolution, K. R. Wood, a well-known Texas singer and 1-20 songwriter and a Texas history fan, has written an album telling 1-21 their story and the story of the battle for freedom from Mexico; 1-22 and 1-23 WHEREAS, The album, entitled the "Fathers of Texas," begins 2-1 with the early settlement, the "Lone Star Dream" of Moses Austin 2-2 and Stephen F. Austin, and continues with the battles of the Texas 2-3 Revolution and the Texas Declaration of Independence; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The "Fathers of Texas" reflects the independence, 2-5 spirit, and commitment on which our state was founded and is a 2-6 beautifully written and recorded educational album; the songs were 2-7 recorded by such great Texas artists as Red Steagall, Gary P. Nunn, 2-8 Steven Fromholz, Delbert McClinton, the late Townes Van Zandt, 2-9 Rusty Wier, Skeet Anglin, Tom T. Hall, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Shake 2-10 Russell; and 2-11 WHEREAS, A release party for the album took place in 2-12 Luckenbach on Texas Independence Day of this year; on April 21, 2-13 1997, at Stubbs Barbecue in Austin, the album will be recreated, in 2-14 honor of San Jacinto Day, by many of the original recording 2-15 artists, by narrator Guich Koock, and by "Fathers of Texas" 2-16 songwriter, K. R. Wood; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The entire project is an inspirational tribute to 2-18 our heritage and to our courageous forefathers; now, therefore, be 2-19 it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-21 hereby honor the heroes of Texas history on San Jacinto Day of 1997 2-22 and express appreciation to K. R. Wood and to all who participated 2-23 in the creation of the "Fathers of Texas" for this exceptional 2-24 project; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for K. 3-1 R.
