No. 88 97S1414/1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Legislature join the citizens 1-2 of Marshall in expressing great admiration for Sabrina McAfee for 1-3 her exemplary courage in saving the life of a young child; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A school bus driver with the Marshall Independent 1-5 School District for the past five years, Sabrina has a difficult 1-6 route that requires her to carry 75 children from kindergarten age 1-7 through fourth grade to and from school each day; and 1-8 WHEREAS, A dependable employee and very careful driver, 1-9 Sabrina McAfee has lived in Marshall for nearly 20 years and has 1-10 raised three boys of her own ranging in age from 13 to 19; and 1-11 WHEREAS, On January 29, 1997, she was driving her bus filled 1-12 with children going home from school and had slowed to a stop near 1-13 an intersection when one of the students shouted from the back of 1-14 the bus that another student was choking; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Well prepared for such an emergency, Sabrina is 1-16 certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid; she 1-17 stopped the bus immediately and hastened down the aisle to the 1-18 stricken child who was unable to breathe; and 1-19 WHEREAS, After performing the Heimlich Maneuver on Treasure 1-20 Lewis, a third grader at South Marshall, Sabrina checked her throat 1-21 to make sure her airway was clear; she then called for a paramedic 1-22 on her bus radio to check the child for any lingering effects of 1-23 the hard candy that had lodged in her throat; and 2-1 WHEREAS, From a nearby telephone Sabrina McAfee next called 2-2 Treasure's mother, who drove her daughter to the hospital; although 2-3 Treasure had a frightening experience, she had confidence in the 2-4 bus driver who had taken her safely to and from school for four 2-5 years; and 2-6 WHEREAS, All the while Sabrina was taking care of the 2-7 emergency, she was able to keep the busload of children calm; 2-8 thanks to her quick actions and first aid training, she saved the 2-9 life of Treasure Lewis; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-11 hereby recognize Sabrina McAfee as a most distinguished Texas 2-12 heroine who has earned the appreciation and gratitude of her city 2-13 and state; and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for her 2-15 as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Legislature.
