SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pleasure

 1-2     in recognizing the Creagleville Historical Marker Association on

 1-3     the dedication of the Creagleville historical marker on June 21,

 1-4     1997; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Before the Civil War, Creagleville was a thriving

 1-6     community with a church, a school, a wool mill, and a cemetery; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Named for Henry Creagle, who lived from 1826 to

 1-8     1872, the town that was to be Creagleville began to see Anglo

 1-9     settlements in the 1840s; winning his citizenship by being promoted

1-10     for bravery during the Mexican War, Mr. Creagle settled in Van

1-11     Zandt County about 1847; the little frontier community was situated

1-12     on the Dallas-Shreveport Road, a major east-west route; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Van Zandt County was created in 1848; the first

1-14     minister of the gospel, Jesse J. Gage, settled in the Creagleville

1-15     area and performed the first marriage in 1848; and

1-16           WHEREAS, While the agricultural community grew, a cemetery

1-17     was founded and homes were built; three acres were deeded by B. F.

1-18     Wheeler in 1879 to a community organization for a church, school,

1-19     and burial ground; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The oldest documented burial was in 1864, and the

1-21     cemetery contains the graves of more than 50 Civil War veterans as

1-22     well as graves of veterans from 20th century wars; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The community decreased in size as people moved

1-24     away; the school district was consolidated with Grand Saline in

 2-1     1941, and the Methodist Church was closed in 1991; today the

 2-2     activity in old Creagleville concerns the cemetery which is

 2-3     receiving an Official Texas Historical Marker on June 21; now,

 2-4     therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-6     hereby commend the Creagleville Historical Marker Association for

 2-7     its outstanding efforts in preserving an important piece of Texas

 2-8     history; and, be it further

 2-9           RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared as a

2-10     memento of this grand occasion.
