No. 98 97S1488/1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pleasure 1-2 in recognizing the City of Georgetown for its designation as a 1997 1-3 Great American Main Street City awarded by the National Trust for 1-4 Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center and Edward 1-5 Jones Company; and 1-6 WHEREAS, This designation is the highest and most prestigious 1-7 honor that the National Main Street Center gives, and Georgetown is 1-8 the first and only Texas city to be so recognized; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Georgetown was selected as a Main Street City in 1-10 1982 by the Texas Historical Commission's Main Street Program 1-11 because of its broad-based community support for the revitalization 1-12 of its historic downtown; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The Main Street program emphasizes economic 1-14 development, organization, quality design, and promotion of the 1-15 downtown; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The National Main Street Center cited Georgetown for 1-17 its dedication and pride in maintaining a vital downtown business 1-18 district despite the demands of rapid growth; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Georgetown has seen $9 million of private sector 1-20 money reinvested into restoring the downtown area resulting in a 1-21 diversified and vital central business district with 100 percent 1-22 occupancy; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The City of Georgetown and Williamson County 2-1 governments have reinvested $19.5 million into the downtown for 2-2 adaptive reuse of historic downtown buildings, the construction of 2-3 new public buildings, and infrastructure improvements; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The Main Street Award speaks well of the leadership, 2-5 vision, and volunteer efforts of the citizens and civic leaders of 2-6 Georgetown; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-8 hereby congratulate the City of Georgetown on its designation as a 2-9 1997 Great American Main Street City; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 2-11 city as an expression of the high esteem and regard of the Texas 2-12 Legislature.
