                            SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, State law (Section 2165.005, Government Code)

 1-2     stipulates that the name of a state building must be approved and

 1-3     authorized by a concurrent resolution passed by the legislature and

 1-4     signed by the governor; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, The Governing Board for the Texas School for the

 1-6     Deaf is requesting that the Business Office/Warehouse on the school

 1-7     campus at 1102 South Congress Avenue in Austin be designated as the

 1-8     Elisha M. Pease Building; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Elisha M. Pease is among the great men of Texas who

1-10     have left their indelible mark on the state, having served as

1-11     Governor of Texas from 1853 to 1857; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Governor Pease recommended to the legislature the

1-13     establishment of the Texas School for the Deaf in 1856; the school

1-14     remains to this day in its original location; and

1-15           WHEREAS, A native of Enfield, Connecticut, Elisha Pease moved

1-16     to Texas in 1834 and continued to reside in his adopted state until

1-17     his death in August, 1883; and

1-18           WHEREAS, An avowed liberal with far-sighted humanitarian

1-19     idealism, Governor Pease espoused the plight of the unfortunate so

1-20     vigorously that considerable rehabilitative and protective

1-21     legislation was enacted during his four-year term; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Texans will remember Governor Pease for his

1-23     leadership and achievements, and it is fitting that a state

 2-1     building be named in his honor; now, therefore, be it

 2-2           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-3     hereby direct that the Business Office/Warehouse on the Texas

 2-4     School for the Deaf campus be named the Elisha M. Pease Building in

 2-5     honor of one of the state's most distinguished leaders and

 2-6     citizens; and, be it further

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official

 2-8     copy of this resolution to the executive director of the General

 2-9     Services Commission.
