By Nixon S.J.R. No. 11 75R906 DRH-D A JOINT RESOLUTION 1-1 proposing a constitutional amendment relating to the eligibility of 1-2 a person who is delinquent in the payment of taxes to be a 1-3 candidate for or to hold elective office. 1-4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Article XVI, Texas Constitution, is amended by 1-6 adding Section 5a to read as follows: 1-7 Sec. 5a. The legislature by general law may provide that a 1-8 person is not eligible to be a candidate for or hold an elective 1-9 office of the state or a political subdivision of the state if the 1-10 person is delinquent in the payment of taxes. 1-11 SECTION 2. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be 1-12 submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 4, 1997. 1-13 The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the 1-14 proposition: "The constitutional amendment authorizing the 1-15 legislature to prohibit a person who is delinquent in the payment 1-16 of taxes from being a candidate for or holding an elective office."
