No. 20 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed January 28, 1997; February 3, 1997, 1-3 read first time and referred to Committee on Finance; 1-4 February 18, 1997, reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 1-5 13, Nays 0; February 18, 1997, sent to printer.) 1-6 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 1-7 proposing a constitutional amendment relating to the creation of a 1-8 judicial compensation commission. 1-9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-10 SECTION 1. Article V, Texas Constitution, is amended by 1-11 adding Section 32 to read as follows: 1-12 Sec. 32. (a) Notwithstanding any other provisions of this 1-13 constitution, the Legislature may by law create a judicial 1-14 compensation commission to make recommendations for judicial 1-15 salaries that become law if neither the Senate nor the House of 1-16 Representatives, by majority vote, rejects the recommendations. 1-17 (b) Subsection (a) of this section applies only to salaries 1-18 for justices and judges of the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal 1-19 Appeals, the Courts of Appeal, and the District Courts. 1-20 SECTION 2. This proposed constitutional amendment shall be 1-21 submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 4, 1997. 1-22 The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the 1-23 proposition: "The constitutional amendment authorizing the 1-24 legislature to create a judicial compensation commission." 1-25 * * * * *
