                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION

 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of

 1-2     county treasurer of Harris County.

 1-3           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-4           SECTION 1.  Section 44, Article XVI, Texas Constitution, is

 1-5     amended by adding Subsection (j) to read as follows:

 1-6           (j)  The office of County Treasurer in Harris County is

 1-7     abolished.  The Commissioners Court of Harris County may employ or

 1-8     contract with a qualified person or may designate another county

 1-9     officer to perform any of the functions that would have been

1-10     performed by the County Treasurer if the office had not been

1-11     abolished.

1-12           SECTION 2.  The following temporary provision is added to the

1-13     Texas Constitution:

1-14           TEMPORARY PROVISION.  The abolition of the office of County

1-15     Treasurer in Harris County under the constitutional amendment

1-16     proposed by the 75th Legislature, Regular Session, 1997, providing

1-17     for the abolition of that office takes effect January 1, 1998.

1-18     This provision expires January 2, 1998.

1-19           SECTION 3.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be

1-20     submitted to the voters at an election to be held on November 4,

1-21     1997.  The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against

1-22     the proposition: "The constitutional amendment providing for the

1-23     abolition of the office of county treasurer in Harris County."
