 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing Partners in Policymaking, a leadership training program

 1-5     sponsored by the Texas Planning Council for Developmental

 1-6     Disabilities; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Partners in Policymaking is an innovative program

 1-8     that is designed to prepare individuals with disabilities and

 1-9     family members of children with disabilities to be knowledgeable

1-10     and effective advocates and leaders; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Representing a variety of ethnic backgrounds,

1-12     geographic regions of the state, and types of disabilities,

1-13     participants explore current disability issues, best practices,

1-14     policymaking, and legislative processes at the local, state, and

1-15     federal levels; the goal of the program is to help individuals

1-16     build the skills they need in order to influence legislation and

1-17     policy to the benefit of the disabled; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Participants in the program attend eight monthly

1-19     two-day training sessions and complete a major assignment, such

1-20     as serving an internship, organizing a letter-writing campaign,

1-21     or organizing receptions for public officials; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Mock legislative training sessions play a

1-23     significant role in the program and have been held in the

 2-1     Senate Chamber of the Texas State Capitol over the last eight

 2-2     years; now, therefore, be it

 2-3           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-4     75th Legislature, hereby grant permission to Partners in

 2-5     Policymaking for the use of the Senate Chamber on January 25

 2-6     and February 8, 1997, and January 17 and February 7, 1998, or

 2-7     on the closest Saturdays to those dates that the chamber is

 2-8     available; and, be it further

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Texas Senate hereby commend Partners in

2-10     Policymaking participants for 1997 and 1998 and wish them future

2-11     success; and, be it further

2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-13     the 1997 and 1998 participants as an expression of regard from

2-14     the Texas Senate.
