 1-5                         Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride

 1-7     in recognizing the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who

 1-8     was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, One of the most influential men of the 20th century,

1-10     Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., contributed in countless ways to the

1-11     enrichment of our country, and it is appropriate that our state and

1-12     nation continue to pay tribute to his life and work; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. King was a

1-14     great orator who inspired millions to join his commitment to

1-15     nonviolence and his struggle for equal rights; and

1-16           WHEREAS, From 1956 until his assassination in 1968, Dr. King

1-17     was an outspoken critic of racial injustice, and he inspired a

1-18     generation to strive for improved civil rights, equal educational

1-19     opportunity, and economic well-being for all; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Dr. King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech, which

1-21     he delivered in 1963, is considered an oratorical masterpiece and

1-22     exemplifies his charismatic leadership and eloquence; and

1-23           WHEREAS, A man of uncommon vision and determination,

 2-1     Dr. King dedicated his life to the betterment of his country and

 2-2     to mobilizing disadvantaged people of all races to work together

 2-3     toward achieving economic and social parity; now, therefore, be it

 2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-5     75th Legislature, hereby join citizens across the nation in paying

 2-6     tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and that when the Senate

 2-7     adjourns this day, it do so in his memory.
