1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, It is a distinct honor and a great pleasure for 1-4 the Senate of the State of Texas to recognize its most esteemed 1-5 officer, Secretary of the Senate Betty King; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Elected to her responsible position in 1977, 1-7 Mrs. King is one of the most respected officials in state 1-8 government; before becoming Secretary, Mrs. King had served 1-9 as administrative assistant to two state senators and as the 1-10 Senate Journal Clerk; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The second generation in her family to work in 1-12 the statehouse, Mrs. King began working in the Capitol shortly 1-13 after coming to Austin to attend The University of Texas at 1-14 Austin; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Renowned for her diplomacy and understanding 1-16 of the political process, this noteworthy lady was honored by 1-17 the members of the Texas Senate last year for her 47 years of 1-18 outstanding service in the Texas Capitol; and 1-19 WHEREAS, During the legislative session, Betty King's 1-20 responsibilities as Secretary are onerous and exacting; besides 1-21 handling her duties as chief administrative officer for the 1-22 Senate, she is a highly sought-after speaker at civic and 1-23 charitable functions; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Charming and skillfully apolitical, Mrs. King 2-2 has always been most helpful to the senators and their staffs; 2-3 she is ready to assist any of her employees when they face a 2-4 problem and has earned the loyalty of each member of her staff; 2-5 and 2-6 WHEREAS, Her office on the second floor of the Capitol is 2-7 always busy dispensing information about the Senate; and 2-8 WHEREAS, The recipient of countless awards, Mrs. King 2-9 has contributed her time to many public service organizations; 2-10 she is past staff chair of the National Conference of State 2-11 Legislatures and past president of the American Society of 2-12 Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; she received the Outstanding 2-13 Achievement Award for Government Service from the Austin Young 2-14 Women's Christian Association and was selected as one of seven 2-15 Outstanding Women in Texas Government in 1988; and 2-16 WHEREAS, One who truly believes in community service, 2-17 she is President-elect of the Austin Lyric Opera and the Docents 2-18 of the Governor's Mansion, vice president of the Texas affiliate 2-19 of the American Heart Association and the Austin Symphony League, 2-20 on the Advisory Board of United Action for the Elderly, and a 2-21 member of the Board of Directors of the Settlement Home for 2-22 Children; and 2-23 WHEREAS, Sharing in the concerns and accomplishments of 2-24 Betty King are her devoted husband, noted attorney William M.
