 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                          Mable M. Jackson Chandler

 1-6           WHEREAS, The City of Dallas lost a beloved resident with

 1-7     the death of Mable M. Jackson Chandler on January 13, 1997; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Mama Chandler," the

 1-9     esteemed educator and counselor touched the lives of many during

1-10     her 39-year career with the Dallas Independent School District;

1-11     and

1-12           WHEREAS, A summa cum laude graduate of Samuel Tillotson

1-13     College, Mrs. Chandler received her master's degree from the

1-14     University of Iowa; and

1-15           WHEREAS, A gifted and dedicated educator, Mable Chandler

1-16     distinguished herself throughout her career at B. F. Darrell

1-17     Elementary School, Booker T. Washington and Lincoln high schools,

1-18     and Bishop College Center; her students remember with fondness and

1-19     gratitude her radiant Christian spirit and her genuine concern for

1-20     their well-being and future happiness; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Widely recognized and applauded as a moving

1-22     force in the Dallas civil rights movement, Mrs. Chandler espoused

1-23     racial equality and economic justice with unwavering passion and

 2-1     conviction; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Her outstanding contributions to the African

 2-3     American community and to the City of Dallas were recognized

 2-4     when she was named to the Texas Black Women's Hall of Fame;

 2-5     other honors accorded this remarkable woman were the

 2-6     A. Maceo Smith Award, the Willow Award, and the Girl Scout

 2-7     Award; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Living her Christian beliefs in thought, word,

 2-9     and deed, Mable Chandler served as a Sunday school superintendent

2-10     for 45 years and taught in an Upward Bound program at Southern

2-11     Methodist University; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Through her extraordinary achievements and

2-13     unquenchable spirit, Mama Chandler enriched her community and

2-14     her state, and her presence will be deeply missed and forever

2-15     gratefully remembered; now, therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-17     75th Legislature, hereby extend deepest sympathy to the members

2-18     of her family:  her stepdaughter, Dorothy Mae Chandler Brown;

2-19     her granddaughter, Ara Evelyn Latimar; and her stepbrother,

2-20     Morris Hopkins; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-22     members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the

2-23     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so

2-24     in memory of Mable M. Jackson Chandler.
