 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The national organization of the Sons of Confederate

 1-4     Veterans, a nonpolitical, historical, and patriotic society, was

 1-5     organized at Richmond, Virginia, in July, 1896; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, The society is composed of male descendants of

 1-7     veterans of the Confederate armed forces who served honorably

 1-8     in the War Between the States from 1861 to 1865; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The Sons of Confederate Veterans has worked for over

1-10     a century to preserve the history and legacy of the Confederacy

1-11     through a variety of activities such as preservation work,

1-12     historical reenactments, scholarly publications, and the marking

1-13     of Confederate soldiers' graves; and

1-14           WHEREAS, John B. Hood was the commander of the renowned

1-15     Hood's Texas Brigade that served valiantly during the War Between

1-16     the States; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The John B. Hood Camp 50 of the Sons of Confederate

1-18     Veterans was organized at Galveston, Texas, on January 21, 1897,

1-19     and served honorably through four decades; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The Great Depression, World War II, and the loss

1-21     of many of the camp's original members led to the group's demise;

1-22     and

1-23           WHEREAS, Due to a revival of local interest in the War

 2-1     Between the States, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is

 2-2     reinstituting the John B. Hood Camp 50 at Galveston on

 2-3     January 21, 1997, on the 100th anniversary of the original camp's

 2-4     founding; now, therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-6     75th Legislature, hereby designate January 21, 1997, as

 2-7     John B. Hood Camp 50 Day in honor of the officers and members of

 2-8     the newly reactivated organization and in appreciation of their

 2-9     mission to preserve the history and legacy of the late Confederate

2-10     States of America and the role of Texas therein; and, be it further

2-11           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-12     the organization as an expression of the good will and high regard

2-13     of the Texas Senate.
