1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Freddie Martinez, Sr., on the auspicious 1-5 occasion of his induction into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of 1-6 Fame; and 1-7 WHEREAS, On January 24, 1997, the Tejano Music Awards will 1-8 host a reception in Corpus Christi in honor of Mr. Martinez; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born Alfredo Ricardo Martinez on April 15, 1942, 1-10 Freddie was the youngest of three children; his mother was 1-11 Rosa Galvan, the sister of orchestra leaders Bobby, Eddie, Ralph, 1-12 and Sammy Galvan, and his father owned several nightclubs in 1-13 Corpus Christi; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A man who loved and was influenced by music, 1-15 Freddie began trumpet lessons at nine years old, and when he 1-16 was 14, he began playing in orchestras; at 16, he formed the 1-17 Freddie Martinez Orchestra and began learning to sing; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Freddie Martinez formed Freddie Records in 1969; 1-19 the first album made a substantial impact and the second and third 1-20 albums were also hits; in 1971, the album, Te Traigo Estas Flores, 1-21 became an immense hit, and Freddie Records became quite a successful 1-22 venture; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The Martinez Orchestra played all across the 2-1 country; it performed before capacity crowds at New York's Madison 2-2 Square Garden, the Los Angeles Million Dollar Theater, and the 2-3 Hollywood Palladium; and 2-4 WHEREAS, After 11 years on the road and after recording over 2-5 30 albums, Mr. Martinez retired the orchestra and began to devote 2-6 more time to his family and his recording company; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Many of the leaders in Tejano music joined the 2-8 Freddie label in 1974, and today it is one of the primary Latin 2-9 recording labels in the business; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-11 75th Legislature, hereby congratulate Freddie Martinez on 2-12 being inducted into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame; 2-13 and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-15 for this outstanding musician and businessman as an expression 2-16 of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-17 Truan 2-18 Armbrister Galloway Nixon 2-19 Barrientos Harris Patterson 2-20 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 2-21 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 2-22 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 2-23 Carona Luna Sibley 2-24 Duncan Madla Wentworth 2-25 Ellis Moncrief West 2-26 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 2-27 Gallegos Zaffirini 2-28 Bullock, President of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 President of the Senate 2-31 I hereby certify that the above 2-32 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-33 on January 21, 1997. 2-34 ______________________________________ 3-1 Secretary of the Senate 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Dean of the Senate
