 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                            Juan M. Balditt, Sr.

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the

 1-7     citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of civic leader

 1-8     Juan M. Balditt, Sr., who died January 14, 1997, at the age of

 1-9     53; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Born on January 31, 1943, in Tampico, Mexico,

1-11     Dr. Balditt became an American citizen and had lived in

1-12     San Antonio since 1961; and

1-13           WHEREAS, He earned his bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's

1-14     University, his master's degree from Texas Tech University, and

1-15     his doctoral degree in educational administration from Bowling

1-16     Green State University in Ohio; and

1-17           WHEREAS, He married Graciela Balditt, and together they made a

1-18     home and raised their children; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Dr. Balditt began his distinguished career as a

1-20     counselor at Saint Phillip's College in the 1970s and transferred

1-21     to San Antonio College in 1986; he worked for the Alamo Community

1-22     College District for over 20 years, and was Dean of Enrollment

1-23     Management at San Antonio College most recently; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, This honorable gentleman dedicated his life to social

 2-2     activism; passionately involved with civil rights organizations,

 2-3     he supported others in reaching their goals and in becoming

 2-4     leaders themselves; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, A man who believed in giving something back to his

 2-6     community, Dr. Balditt was president of the Texas Association

 2-7     of Chicanos in Higher Education and was a leader in the League

 2-8     of United Latin American Citizens; he was well known for his

 2-9     outstanding ability to mentor students, and college freshmen

2-10     sought him for his leadership; and

2-11           WHEREAS, Serving many years as a sponsor of the Young

2-12     Democrats on the college campus, Dr. Balditt crusaded on behalf

2-13     of numerous candidates and helped with their campaigns; and

2-14           WHEREAS, A man of unquestioned ability and integrity,

2-15     Dr. Balditt leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment that

2-16     will be remembered with gratitude by all whose lives he touched;

2-17     now, therefore, be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-19     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his

2-20     family:  his wife, Graciela Balditt; his sons, Ricardo Balditt

2-21     and Juan Balditt, Jr.; his parents, Manuel and Soledad Balditt;

2-22     and his 10 brothers and sisters; and, be it further

2-23           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-24     his family as an expression of the deepest sympathy of the

2-25     Texas Senate, and when the Senate adjourns this day, it do

 3-1     so in memory of Dr. Juan M. Balditt, Sr.
