1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-3 In Memory
1-4 of
1-5 Joe Olivares, Sr.
1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
1-7 of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Joe Olivares, Sr., who died
1-8 January 12, 1997, at the age of 96; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Born July 27, 1900, in the City of Parras, Coahuila,
1-10 Mexico, Joe Olivares, Sr., was best known for his lifetime of
1-11 outstanding public service; he was also a successful businessman,
1-12 who was a real estate broker and owner of the Continental Hotel
1-13 and KIWW radio station; and
1-14 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman,
1-15 Joe Olivares was respected in the community for his wide-ranging
1-16 expertise and his many accomplishments; and
1-17 WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, he was a cofounder of
1-18 the Good Government League, the San Antonio Mexican Chamber of
1-19 Commerce, and the Feria De Las Flores, now known as the Rey Feo
1-20 Scholarship Committee; he was a member of the San Antonio City
1-21 Council from 1955 to 1960; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Mr. Olivares served as president of the League of
1-23 United Latin American Citizens Council Number 2 and as national
2-1 treasurer of the league; he was board chairman for the Select
2-2 Civil Service Commission and served on the City Charter Commission
2-3 and the board of Bexar County National Bank; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Renowned for his generosity and his dedication to
2-5 the betterment of the community, he gave unselfishly of his time
2-6 to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be
2-7 forgotten by those who knew him; and
2-8 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mr. Olivares was a member of
2-9 Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society,
2-10 the Holy Name Society, and the 4th Degree Knight-Columbus Society;
2-11 and
2-12 WHEREAS, Joe Olivares was a devoted father and grandfather
2-13 who lived his life to the fullest, and he leaves behind memories
2-14 that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends;
2-15 now, therefore, be it
2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17 75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-18 bereaved family of Joe Olivares, Sr.: his son and daughter-in-law,
2-19 Jose F. Olivares, Jr., and Nancy C. Olivares; and his 10
2-20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and, be it further
2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
2-22 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
2-23 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
2-24 do so in memory of Joe Olivares, Sr.
