 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great

 1-4     pleasure in honoring Doctor Jose Angel Gutierrez for his

 1-5     contributions to the Mexican American community throughout the

 1-6     State of Texas; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Recently appointed as Special Advisor to the

 1-8     President, The University of Texas at Arlington, for Chicano

 1-9     political issues, Dr. Gutierrez has been an outstanding and highly

1-10     effective leader in the Chicano community for 25 years; and

1-11           WHEREAS, A dedicated and talented teacher, Dr. Gutierrez

1-12     has developed many new courses in political science for the

1-13     university; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A 1966 graduate of Texas A&M University at

1-15     Kingsville with a bachelor's degree in government, Dr. Gutierrez

1-16     earned his master's degree in government from Saint Mary's

1-17     University at San Antonio; and

1-18           WHEREAS, A gifted scholar, he earned his doctorate at

1-19     The University of Texas at Austin and continued his schooling by

1-20     earning a law degree from Bates College of Law at the University

1-21     of Houston in 1988; and

1-22           WHEREAS, The director and founder of the Center for

1-23     Mexican American Studies at The University of Texas at Arlington,

 2-1     Dr. Gutierrez has been a longtime advocate of Hispanic causes and

 2-2     issues; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, As an educator, lecturer, and activist,

 2-4     Dr. Gutierrez has provided invaluable service to his community

 2-5     and his state; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, A noted authority on the history of Chicano

 2-7     activism, this inspired educator has given of his time and energy

 2-8     in the quest for equal opportunity and justice for all; now,

 2-9     therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-11     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez

2-12     on his achievements and accomplishments; and, be it further

2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-14     him as an expression of the high regard and esteem of the

2-15     Texas Senate.
