 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes great pleasure in welcoming

 1-4     the Mariachi Los Tigres del Sur to the State Capitol on

 1-5     January 29, 1997; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, These excellent young musicians are directed by

 1-7     Francisco Javier Sosa II and are to be commended for their fine

 1-8     work in preserving an important part of Texas culture; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Composed of students from the orchestra, choir, and

1-10     band at Martin High School in Laredo, they have received praise

1-11     from audiences around the country for their artistic ability; and

1-12           WHEREAS, To ensure that they are using authentic voice

1-13     techniques, realistic costumes, and superb instrumental

1-14     procedures, the gifted young men and women have carefully

1-15     researched mariachi music; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Director Sosa, formerly the student director of the

1-17     Mariachi Javelina at Texas A&M University in Kingsville, brings

1-18     his experience and expertise to the colorful group; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The Tigers of the South are not only contributing

1-20     to their community in a unique way by preserving this lively

1-21     musical form for future generations, they are also introducing

1-22     this traditional music to new audiences for their enjoyment; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The members of the Mariachi Los Tigres del Sur have

 2-1     already successfully performed at state competitions, where they

 2-2     have frequently won awards, and they have been invited to perform

 2-3     at numerous educational and civic occasions, including the Texas

 2-4     State School Board and Superintendent Convention, the Texas

 2-5     Bandmasters Convention, and the National Civic League Convention;

 2-6     and

 2-7           WHEREAS, These excellent young musicians are to be commended

 2-8     for their dedication and enthusiastic endeavors to immortalize this

 2-9     distinct and beautiful music form; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-11     75th Legislature, hereby express its appreciation to the

2-12     members of the Mariachi Los Tigres del Sur and their director,

2-13     Francisco Javier Sosa II, for their splendid contributions to

2-14     the musical heritage of the Lone Star State; and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-16     distinguished group as an expression of the high regard of the

2-17     Texas Senate.
