 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing the City of Jefferson as the Bed and Breakfast Capital

 1-5     of East Texas; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, One of our state's most historic towns, Jefferson

 1-7     is located in Marion County and is the fifth oldest town in Texas;

 1-8     organized in 1842, Jefferson has more than 30 structures that

 1-9     bear State Historical Medallions; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Built in 1889, the Pride House was recorded as

1-11     a Texas Historical Landmark in 1983 by the Texas Historical

1-12     Commission; the Pride House offered the first bed and breakfast

1-13     accommodations known in Texas when it was opened by

1-14     Ruth Mary Jordan and Sandy Spaulding in May of 1980; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Jefferson has more bed and breakfast establishments

1-16     per capita than any other city in Texas; approximately 40 bed

1-17     and breakfast accommodations are offered in the town's historic

1-18     buildings; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The many bed and breakfast establishments in

1-20     Jefferson provide interesting and comfortable accommodations

1-21     to Jefferson's visitors and are especially appreciated during

1-22     the Annual Pilgrimage Home Tours in May and the Candlelight

1-23     Tour of Homes in December when tourism in the town is at its

 2-1     height; now, therefore, be it

 2-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-3     75th Legislature, hereby declare Jefferson, Texas, as the Bed

 2-4     and Breakfast Capital of East Texas and extend appreciation

 2-5     to its residents for preserving the town's numerous amenities;

 2-6     and, be it further

 2-7           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

 2-8     the residents of Jefferson as an expression of esteem from the

 2-9     Texas Senate.
