No. 90 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, John Etta Slaughter will be inducted into the 1-4 1997 Counting My Blessings Hall of Fame of the Century on 1-5 February 7, 1997, at a special ceremony in Saint Philip's 1-6 College Fine Arts Center; and 1-7 WHEREAS, One of five honorees, Mrs. Slaughter is professor 1-8 emeritus and chairman emeritus of the Social Sciences Department 1-9 of Saint Philip's College and is being recognized for her 1-10 contributions to education and to her community; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. W. S. Brent, 1-12 John Etta is a graduate of I. M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth; 1-13 she attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she 1-14 earned her bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in American 1-15 history; she continued her postgraduate studies in American and 1-16 European history at several other universities; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Throughout her professional career, Mrs. Slaughter 1-18 has earned the admiration and respect of her colleagues and her 1-19 students, who have benefitted from her excellent teaching methods; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, Contributing her time and energies to her community 1-22 as well as her profession, Mrs. Slaughter has been active in 1-23 various civic and educational organizations; she is a member 2-1 of the Eastside Boys and Girls Club Advisory Council, the 2-2 Bexar County Historical Commission, and the State Psychological 2-3 Associates Advisory Committee; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Past president of the San Antonio Chapter of Delta 2-5 Sigma Theta Sorority, Mrs. Slaughter has shared her expertise 2-6 in the field of education as secretary of the San Antonio 2-7 Commission on Literacy and as chair of the Education Committee 2-8 of the San Antonio Branch of the National Association for the 2-9 Advancement of Colored People; and 2-10 WHEREAS, She has been the recipient of special awards for 2-11 her dedication to her work and for her major accomplishments; in 2-12 1985 and 1988, she was honored with Master Teacher Awards from 2-13 The University of Texas at Austin; in 1990, the Alamo Community 2-14 College District presented her with the Teacher of the Year Award 2-15 and in 1996 she was given the Artemsia Bowden Award; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 75th Legislature, hereby commend John Etta Slaughter for her 2-19 notable work throughout her professional life and congratulate 2-20 her for being chosen for selection in the Counting My Blessings 2-21 Hall of Fame of the Century; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-23 as a memento of this important occasion. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 2-26 I hereby certify that the above 2-27 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-1 on January 30, 1997. 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
