 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing Ruth Aaron Burns, who has been selected for induction

 1-5     into the Counting My Blessings Hall of Fame of the Century; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Ruth Burns graduated from

 1-7     Phyllis Wheatley High School, received a bachelor of arts degree

 1-8     in music from Prairie View University, and earned a master's

 1-9     degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University; and

1-10           WHEREAS, She was a successful teacher at Dorie Miller

1-11     Elementary School for 32 years; throughout her career, she also

1-12     worked tirelessly as a volunteer for a number of organizations,

1-13     including the United Negro College Fund, the National Association

1-14     for the Advancement of Colored People, and the March of Dimes; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Ruth Burns has been active in the Second Baptist

1-16     Church of San Antonio for many years; she has served as a church

1-17     organist and a musician for the Sanctuary Choir, Youth Choir,

1-18     Men's Chorus, and Sunday school; she currently serves as executive

1-19     musician for the Contemporaries and the Sanctuary Tones; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Highly talented in the field of music, Ruth is the

1-21     director of the Deltones, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority chorale

1-22     group; under her leadership, the group has performed at numerous

1-23     civic and cultural events and has presented programs for the Armed

 2-1     Forces Veterans in Kerrville and at the Audie Murphy Veterans'

 2-2     Hospital; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, An exemplary lady who gives generously of her time

 2-4     to others, Ruth Burns was honored by her sorority in 1989 when

 2-5     she was named the Delta Woman of the Year, and she was one of

 2-6     several ladies honored by the San Antonio Top Ladies of Distinction

 2-7     in 1991; now, therefore, be it

 2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-9     75th Legislature, hereby commend Ruth Aaron Burns on her exceptional

2-10     achievements and extend congratulations to her on her induction into

2-11     the Counting My Blessings Hall of Fame of the Century; and, be it

2-12     further

2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-14     her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
