 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing Monday, February 3, 1997, as Texas Public Community

 1-5     College Day at the Capitol; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Each year, more than 43 percent of the state's

 1-7     students, or over 400,000 people, attend Texas' community

 1-8     colleges; the state boasts 50 community college districts with

 1-9     more than 70 campuses; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Community colleges in Texas provide a wide array

1-11     of educational services; these institutions offer continuing

1-12     education, community education, two-year degree programs, basic

1-13     skills education, and certification programs for employment; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A significant source of strength to our state,

1-15     Texas' community colleges assist our citizens with job searching

1-16     and career development; by working in partnerships with business,

1-17     industry, and  government, community colleges provide job training

1-18     assistance and economic development; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The community colleges of Texas offer quality

1-20     education at a reasonable cost and are a valuable resource for

1-21     citizens of all ages who wish to make advances in their educational

1-22     and professional goals; now, therefore, be it

1-23           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-1     75th Legislature, hereby commend the elected trustees, employees,

 2-2     and students of the community colleges of Texas and extend best

 2-3     wishes to them for a joyous Texas Public Community College Day;

 2-4     and, be it further

 2-5           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an

 2-6     expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
