No. 99 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The City of Austin will extend a warm and 1-4 entertaining welcome to the 75th Texas Legislature on 1-5 February 5, 1997, with a festive celebration at the 1-6 Great Austin Bash in honor of these notable visitors; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The River City and its residents eagerly 1-8 anticipate the biannual arrival of the state's lawmakers to 1-9 their beautiful city as an exciting and historic event; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since the site for a new capital city for the 1-11 Republic of Texas was chosen in 1839 on the north bank of the 1-12 Colorado River, the city has attracted a diverse group of 1-13 residents, who are charmed by the scenic beauty and quality 1-14 of life the area affords; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The magnificent State Capitol completed in 1888 1-16 and its surrounding 46 acres of immaculate, landscaped grounds 1-17 are sources of unabashed pride by Texans and are visited by 1-18 thousands of people each year from around the world; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Emerging from a quiet city with a small-town 1-20 atmosphere to a large, metropolitan seat of government, Austin 1-21 is home to several outstanding educational institutions and 1-22 has become a prime site for high-tech businesses; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Widely known for its diverse music community 2-1 and live music scene, Austin is alive with the sounds of jazz, 2-2 country/western, reggae, swing, rock, and blues that can be 2-3 heard in the various clubs around the city as well as night 2-4 spots along the city's famous Sixth Street; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Austin has a park system second to none that 2-6 provides municipal golf courses, playgrounds, swimming pools, 2-7 tennis courts, recreation centers, and athletic fields for all 2-8 to enjoy in the mild, sunny weather year-round; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Museums, boat excursions, walking tours, nature 2-10 centers and preserves, historic buildings and homes, theaters, 2-11 and libraries offer limitless possibilities for families who 2-12 visit or live in the area; and 2-13 WHEREAS, One of Austin's newest and most fascinating 2-14 additions is the National Wildflower Research Center founded 2-15 by Lady Bird Johnson in 1982 that is devoted to research and 2-16 education in order to preserve, propagate, and encourage the 2-17 use of wildflowers throughout the nation; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Legislators will find Austin is peopled by 2-19 friendly, helpful folks who are anxious to share the many 2-20 wonderful attributes of their city with their distinguished 2-21 guests; and 2-22 WHEREAS, On the evening of February 5, 1997, the 2-23 Travis County Legislative Delegation and well-known Austinites, 2-24 including representatives of the Austin American-Statesman, 2-25 the City of Austin, the Downtown Austin Alliance, the Greater 3-1 Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Radisson Hotel on Town Lake, 3-2 The University of Texas, and Travis County will host the Great 3-3 Austin Bash to honor the members of the Texas Legislature; and 3-4 WHEREAS, Providing the musical entertainment at the event 3-5 will be singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker and the western swing 3-6 music of Asleep at the Wheel, assuring guests of an enjoyable, 3-7 Texas-style evening filled with the unique hospitality for which 3-8 the Lone Star State is famous; now, therefore, be it 3-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-10 75th Legislature, hereby recognize February 5, 1997, as the day 3-11 of the Great Austin Bash to extend a cordial reception to the 3-12 members of the 75th Legislature. 3-13 ______________________________________ 3-14 President of the Senate 3-15 I hereby certify that the above 3-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-17 on February 3, 1997. 3-18 ______________________________________ 3-19 Secretary of the Senate 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 Member, Texas Senate
