1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-4 recognize the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Armory in Corpus Christi on 1-5 the occasion of its rededication on February 8, 1997; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The armory is the headquarters for the 386th 1-7 Engineer Battalion; the Organizational Maintenance Shop Number 7; 1-8 the C Battery, 4th Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery; and the 1-9 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment of the Texas State Guard; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Hector P. Garcia was a civil rights activist 1-11 and a nationally known patriot, physician, and statesman, and he 1-12 was the founder of the American G. I. Forum; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous honors and awards, 1-14 Dr. Garcia was awarded a Bronze Star for services he performed 1-15 for his country during World War II, was appointed by 1-16 President Lyndon Johnson to be a delegate to the United Nations 1-17 with the rank of ambassador, and was sworn in as Commissioner 1-18 of the United States Commission on Civil Rights in 1968; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A winner of the Hispanic Heritage Award 1-20 presented by the National Hispanic Leadership Conference in 1989, 1-21 Dr. Garcia was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the 1-22 National Office of Civil Rights in 1980 and was awarded the MAPA 1-23 Award by the Mexican American Physicians' Association for 2-1 outstanding service to Hispanics throughout the United States; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his 2-3 actions benefitting others in 1984, this renowned humanitarian 2-4 was presented with the Equestrian Order of Pope Gregory the Great 2-5 by Pope John Paul II in 1990; and 2-6 WHEREAS, As a tribute to the memory of this man's 2-7 contributions to peace and equality, the Corpus Christi armory is 2-8 being renamed to honor him; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 75th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the rededication 2-11 of the armory to honor Dr. Hector P.
