 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                               Jesus R. Rivera

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Jesus R. Rivera, who died

 1-8     December 19, 1996, at the age of 71; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born on the Chapman Ranch on October 10, 1925, he

1-10     was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church; and

1-11           WHEREAS, A retired firefighter, Mr. Rivera was with the

1-12     Corpus Christi Fire Department for over 28 years; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A lifelong patriot, he served his country honorably

1-14     during World War II as a member of the United States Army; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Jesus Rivera earned his high school diploma after

1-16     his military service; and

1-17           WHEREAS, This honorable gentleman dedicated his life to

1-18     social activism; he was a member of the North American Seniors;

1-19     and

1-20           WHEREAS, A man who believed in giving something back to

1-21     his community, Mr. Rivera was a member of the Mexican American

1-22     Democrats, a member of Tejano Democrats, vice president of

1-23     L.A.C.L.A., and a board member of the Nueces County Community

 2-1     Action Agency; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, A lifetime member of the American G. I. Forum,

 2-3     he was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council

 2-4     Number 10931; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, A man of unquestioned ability and integrity,

 2-6     Mr. Rivera leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment that will

 2-7     be remembered with gratitude by all whose lives he touched; now,

 2-8     therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-10     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-11     members of his family:  his wife, Margarita G. Rivera; his

2-12     daughter, Amanda Hernandez; his son, Jerry A. Rivera; his sisters,

2-13     Maria Velasquez and Teresa Gonzalez; and his four grandchildren;

2-14     and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-16     his family as an expression of the deepest sympathy of the

2-17     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it

2-18     do so in memory of Jesus R. Rivera.
