 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing Max Ray Sherman, who recently announced his retirement,

 1-5     effective August 31, 1997, after 14 years of outstanding service

 1-6     as the dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at

 1-7     The University of Texas at Austin; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, Max Sherman grew up in the Panhandle in

 1-9     Phillips, Texas, and graduated from The University of Texas

1-10     at Austin School of Law; he served in the Texas State Senate

1-11     representing District 31 from 1971 to 1977 and was a highly

1-12     respected legislator; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman has served as the dean of the

1-14     Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, The University of Texas

1-15     at Austin, since 1983, and it is largely due to his outstanding

1-16     leadership that the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs has

1-17     earned an international reputation; and

1-18           WHEREAS, A man of uncommon talent, integrity, and tenacity,

1-19     Max Sherman has played a major role in making the LBJ School of

1-20     Public Affairs one of the premier institutions in the country;

1-21     and

1-22           WHEREAS, He holds the J. J. "Jake" Pickle Regents Chair in

1-23     Public Affairs and is a frequent lecturer on ethics, leadership,

 2-1     and public service; he is well known as a strong proponent of

 2-2     governmental effectiveness and serves on the National Commission

 2-3     on State and Local Public Service; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman also serves on the Ford Foundation's

 2-5     National Committee on Innovations in State and Local Government

 2-6     and the National Academy of Public Administration; he has served

 2-7     on the Southern Regional Education Board and the Texas Adult

 2-8     Probation Commission and was formerly chairman of the Governor's

 2-9     Energy Advisory Council; and

2-10           WHEREAS, He is a distinguished and exemplary gentleman

2-11     and a prominent civic leader in the City of Austin; as a

2-12     tribute to his extensive influence on the community and his many

2-13     accomplishments, Mr. Sherman was recently named the 1996 Austinite

2-14     of the Year by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce; now,

2-15     therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-17     75th Legislature, hereby commend Max Sherman on his countless

2-18     contributions to the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs,

2-19     the City of Austin, and the State of Texas and extend to him

2-20     best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him

2-22     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
