No. 133 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast on the occasion 1-5 of its 75th anniversary; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast was officially 1-7 chartered as the Houston Community Chest on August 30, 1922; and 1-8 WHEREAS, On June 25, 1974, the association's name was changed 1-9 to United Fund of Houston and Harris County; on June 1, 1979, it 1-10 took the current name of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Taking responsibility for the positive achievement of 1-12 its goals through vision, wisdom, and integrity, the United Way of 1-13 the Texas Gulf Coast upholds the values of efficiency, effectiveness, 1-14 collaboration, caring, and trustworthiness; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Serving Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, and Montgomery 1-16 counties and the Bay Area, the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast 1-17 helps by funding more than 200 health and human service programs 1-18 through 78 nonprofit agencies; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Keeping its operating costs low and utilizing over 1-20 80,000 volunteers, the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast stretches 1-21 its dollars to make a difference in the community; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast was recognized 1-23 by United Way of America in 1996 for being the first recipient of 2-1 the Championing Diversity Award; increasing the organized capacity 2-2 of people to help themselves and others is the mission of the 2-3 United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast; and 2-4 WHEREAS, On a yearly basis, the United Way of the Texas 2-5 Gulf Coast raises millions of dollars with the assistance of 400 2-6 campaign workers and 90 loaned executives and the support of over 2-7 50,000 people and organizations throughout the Houston area; now, 2-8 therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 75th Legislature, hereby commend and congratulate the United Way 2-11 of the Texas Gulf Coast on its 75th anniversary; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-13 the organization as an expression of the high esteem of the 2-14 Texas Senate. 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on February 10, 1997. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
