 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure

 1-4     in recognizing the Houston branch of the Association for the

 1-5     Study of Afro-American Life and History, Incorporated, and the

 1-6     group's President/Director, Pearl C. Suel; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Incorporated on October 3, 1915, the

 1-8     Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History

 1-9     has its headquarters in Washington, D.C.; all branches of the

1-10     group are committed to research, to publishing works about

1-11     African-American history and culture, and to education; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The President/Director of the Houston branch

1-13     of the study group, Pearl C. Suel, is to be congratulated for

1-14     her work, along with that of the group, in promoting February

1-15     as African-American History Month; and

1-16           WHEREAS, The association sponsors specialized professional

1-17     development workshops and seminars, an annual convention, and a

1-18     national venture of study, discussion, and projection and supports

1-19     diversity through dialogue and public education; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Interested in collaboration and partnerships

1-21     with public and private agencies, the association works with

1-22     public agencies such as the National Endowment for the Humanities,

1-23     the Department of Defense, and the National Park Service and

 2-1     private groups such as the Ford Foundation and the

 2-2     Mary McLeod Bethune Museum; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, The theme for 1997 African-American History

 2-4     Month, "African-Americans and Civil Rights:  A Reappraisal,"

 2-5     should provide substance for many profitable discussions and

 2-6     solutions; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-8     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Association for

 2-9     the Study of Afro-American Life and History, Incorporated, its

2-10     Houston branch, and Pearl C. Suel, and express its admiration;

2-11     and, be it further

2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared

2-13     for the Houston branch of the association as an expression of

2-14     the highest esteem and regard of the Texas Senate.
