 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Benemerita Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexicana

 1-4     is celebrating its 65th anniversary on February 21 and 22, 1997,

 1-5     and the Texas Senate takes great pleasure in honoring the

 1-6     organization on this august occasion; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, On Friday night, February 21, an awards ceremony

 1-8     will be held followed by a mixer, with guests treated to food,

 1-9     refreshment, and a movie; and

1-10           WHEREAS, The center will host a Houston community reception

1-11     honoring the wife of one of the center's past presidents and three

1-12     of the oldest active members; the reception will be the largest

1-13     event held in the 65-year history of the organization; and

1-14           WHEREAS, The Saturday luncheon will honor several dignitaries

1-15     as well as some of the oldest active members for their hard work

1-16     and dedication; a live band will provide an evening of listening

1-17     and dancing enjoyment at no charge to the public; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Established in Houston, Texas, on February 21, 1932,

1-19     Benemerita Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexicana primarily serves the

1-20     elderly Hispanic community; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Dedicated to the welfare of seniors, the center

1-22     provides the elderly with nutritious food and disburses information

1-23     to senior citizens concerning such vital issues as insurance and

 2-1     health; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Benemerita Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexicana offers

 2-3     a necessary service to the Hispanic community, serving as a social

 2-4     center for East End seniors to meet and become better acquainted;

 2-5     now, therefore, be it

 2-6           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-7     75th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Benemerita

 2-8     Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexicana for their devotion to the

 2-9     senior citizens of Houston's East End; and, be it further

2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-11     distinguished group as an expression of the appreciation and high

2-12     regard of the Texas Senate.
