No. 140 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 congratulate the Gee Family Association as it celebrates the 1-5 Chinese New Year on February 23, 1997; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The annual celebration held by the Gee family and 1-7 its large group of relatives and friends is one which has been held 1-8 every year for 49 years; and 1-9 WHEREAS, This year, the Gee family intends to roast elder 1-10 brother George Gee; he is one of the few members of the family who 1-11 has attended all of the 48 previous dinners; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Born on October 16, 1928, in Lake Village, Arkansas, 1-13 he comes from a family of 12 and is the oldest son of eight 1-14 surviving siblings; he and his family moved to Houston in 1940; and 1-15 WHEREAS, He attended Jeff Davis High School and in 1966 was 1-16 inducted into the Jeff Davis Hall of Fame as an outstanding alumnus; 1-17 and 1-18 WHEREAS, For many years, George Gee ran the family grocery 1-19 store, G&G Food Market, on Lyons Street in the Fifth Ward, where he 1-20 became friends with Mickey Leland and Barbara Jordan; he often 1-21 helped those in the neighborhood who could not afford clothing and 1-22 food, and he extended credit to them knowing that they could not 1-23 pay; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Always active in community service, he has supported 2-2 many local officials; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Soon to retire from 20 years with MetLife, George is 2-4 a certified insurance agent, who has been a member of the million 2-5 dollar round table for many years; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A longtime deacon of the Chinese Baptist Church, 2-7 Mr. Gee was the first to organize an Asian youth club in the 2-8 City of Houston in the 1940s; he is a member of the Chinese American 2-9 Citizens Alliance and the Organization of Chinese Americans; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, he has been loved and 2-11 supported by his wife, Gloria, and his two daughters, Alice 2-12 and Zenobia; Gloria and George are the proud grandparents of 2-13 Kristyn and Austin Liu and Ryan and Jaclyn Perry; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Quite active in the Gee Family Association, George 2-15 has served as President and is now on the board of directors; he 2-16 has asked the family to begin an endowment fund to ensure the 2-17 education of future members of the family; and 2-18 WHEREAS, The celebration will start with a welcome and an 2-19 introduction of guests, an invocation, a nine-course dinner, and 2-20 finally, the roast of George Gee; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Participation in these annual festivities which 2-22 celebrate the Chinese New Year by the Gee family and their honored 2-23 guests helps to unite individuals from diverse cultures and 2-24 strengthen community spirit; now, therefore, be it 2-25 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-1 75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Gee family and wish them 3-2 and their honored guests good fortune in the New Year; and, be it 3-3 further 3-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-5 Gee Family Association as an expression of the high regard of the 3-6 Texas Senate. 3-7 ______________________________________ 3-8 President of the Senate 3-9 I hereby certify that the above 3-10 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-11 on February 10, 1997. 3-12 ______________________________________ 3-13 Secretary of the Senate 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 Member, Texas Senate
